Licence categories
Category B and 125cc motorcycles: what can you ride in Italy and abroad?
An Italian B licence allows some A1 vehicles in Italy, but this national equivalence should not be assumed to apply abroad.
In Italy, B also allows A1 motorcycles up to 125 cc, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg. This is a national equivalence: an Italian B licence does not automatically become A1 abroad.
The Italian rule for 125cc motorcycles
With a B licence obtained in Italy, you may ride A1 vehicles within Italy as recognised by Italian law. An A1 motorcycle must be up to 125 cc, no more than 11 kW, and have a power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.1 kW/kg: all three limits apply together. It is not enough for a vehicle simply to be a “125”.
This permission comes from a national provision linked to B; it does not automatically turn the document into an A1 category valid in every country. Across a border, the destination country may recognise European categories rather than Italy’s specific equivalence. Transit countries matter too, as do insurance and rental conditions.
Before riding a motorcycle abroad, check the destination country’s road authority or consulate website to see whether an Italian B licence is sufficient for that vehicle and under what conditions. Ask your insurer and rental company for written confirmation; do not rely on forums or an answer for another country. If the rule is unclear, the prudent choice is to obtain the motorcycle category required there or not take that vehicle across the border.
Before crossing the border, check recognition with the destination country’s authority or consulate and ask your insurer to confirm. The Italian rule does not change the category printed on the licence or require other states to recognise this national equivalence.

How to check your licence and vehicle
Check the vehicle’s registration document for its approval category, engine capacity, power and declared power-to-weight ratio. For the Italian rule, your B licence must also be valid and not subject to a measure preventing you from driving. This national permission is not a licence to ride any lightweight motorcycle or an electric scooter with incompatible specifications.
For travel abroad, keep evidence of information received and check age, helmet, equipment and vehicle-document requirements. This page describes driving entitlement, not the destination country’s customs or traffic rules, which may change.
To revise driving theory,Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, timed exam tests and review of incorrect answers.
