Licence categories
Can you drive a tractor on public roads with category B?
It depends on the tractor’s classification and the road; a category B licence does not make every agricultural machine road-legal.
Sometimes. The required licence depends on the agricultural machine’s registered classification and the driver’s entitlement, while road use separately depends on the vehicle’s technical and administrative requirements and the route. Check the machine documents and the road’s restrictions before driving it on public roads.
Identify the machine and licence category
A tractor is commonly an agricultural machine, but the name alone does not establish the exact legal classification or licence requirement. Read the registration document for its category, maximum authorised mass, seats, speed and any restrictions. Compare those data with Article 116 and the categories recorded on your licence. A training certificate for workplace use is a separate matter from the driving entitlement for public roads.
Do not assume that category B covers every tractor because it is used on a farm. Different machines and configurations can have different requirements, and a trailer changes the vehicle combination that must be assessed. The vehicle must be registered and equipped as required before it is used on the road.
Road access is a separate check
The Highway Code’s road-access rules and signs determine whether a particular type of machine may use a road. Article 175 concerns motorways and main extra-urban roads, with vehicle restrictions; local signs and the road’s legal classification matter. A tractor permitted on one public road is not thereby allowed on every road, and “ring road” or “farm road” as a local name does not decide its legal status.
Before setting off, check the route, signs, vehicle dimensions and any permit or escort requirement. If a machine is unusually wide, heavy or slow, ask the competent authority about the route and any movement authorisation. A correct licence cannot override an access ban or a technical restriction.
Example and practical check
A tractor registered in an agricultural category may be usable on an ordinary road by a driver with the required licence, if all vehicle and route conditions are met. The same tractor may be barred from a motorway or a restricted road. Read the machine document, licence and route signs together; do not decide from the word “tractor” alone.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps study theory questions and review mistakes about road rules. It does not confirm a tractor’s registration or identify whether a specific road admits it.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps study theory questions and review mistakes; a tractor’s licence and road access must be checked from official vehicle data and route signs.
Frequently asked questions
Does category B always cover an agricultural tractor?
No. Check the machine’s registered class, technical data and the licence categories that apply.
If the tractor is allowed on one road, can it use a motorway?
Not automatically. Access depends on the statutory road type, vehicle restrictions and signs.
