Can an Italian category B licence cover a powerful tricycle abroad?

Italy’s category B equivalence for some tricycles over 15 kW does not automatically become a recognised category abroad.

Do not assume an Italian category B licence is enough abroad for a tricycle above 15 kW. In Italy, category B permits this under a national rule from age 21; recognition elsewhere must be checked under local law and against the vehicle’s approved category.

A permission that applies in Italy

Article 116 of the Italian Highway Code includes tricycles above 15 kW among the vehicles that can be ridden in Italy with category B, subject to the age requirement in Article 115: at least 21. It is a national rule linked to category B. It does not mean that the licence shows category A or that the driver passed a motorcycle-category test.

The word “tricycle” does not always identify the same kind of vehicle. Check its approved category, power and technical specifications on the registration certificate. Three-wheeled models may fall into different classes and conditions; do not infer your licence entitlement from appearance or advertising.

The destination country’s law applies abroad

Once you cross the border, Italy’s permission does not automatically apply. The destination country’s rules determine how it recognises licence categories and national equivalences. Before travelling, ask the road authority or another official source whether your Italian B licence covers the exact model and whether another category is required.

Ask the rental company what documents it wants and check the insurance terms too. A contract can set stricter requirements, but it cannot authorise a ride prohibited by local law. If the answers disagree, resolve the question before travelling and keep the competent authority’s response.

A practical example

In Italy, a tricycle approved above 15 kW may fall within the national B permission for a driver aged at least 21. If you take the same vehicle to another country, do not rely on the fact that it would be allowed in Italy. Check whether that country requires category A or another entitlement. The answer depends on the licence, age, vehicle class and place of use, not power alone.
