Licence categories
Category C at 18: when is it possible with goods CQC?
The ordinary minimum age for C is 21; the route can permit 18 with an ordinary initial goods-CQC course and exam.
The ordinary minimum age for category C is 21. The route can allow a person to drive C vehicles at 18 if they complete the ordinary initial goods-CQC qualification course and pass its exam before the practical C test, while also meeting the category C requirements.
The 18-year-old route requires the specified qualification
MIT lists 21 as the ordinary minimum age for category C. The age may fall to 18 when the candidate is enrolled in a goods CQC qualification course and, before taking the practical C test, has completed the course and obtained the CQC. Simply registering for the course, attending part of it or passing only the licence theory test is not enough.
Legislative Decree 286/2005 sets the ages and conditions for professional drivers operating C and CE vehicles with CQC. The ordinary course route for C at 18 differs from other course formats and accelerated options. Confirm that the course and qualification are the ones required for your case. Category C and CQC remain separate documents.
Plan the tests and documents
Coordinate the CQC course and category C test with the driving school and Motor Vehicle Office. C still requires the relevant fitness requirements, theory test and practical test. CQC requires training and a separate exam. Documents and administrative steps can change, so consult the current MIT pages before applying.
Do not drive a C vehicle at 18 based only on starting a course: the required valid entitlements and conditions must be satisfied. Goods CQC does not by itself authorise a truck without category C, and category C alone does not replace CQC where professional work requires it.
Example
An 18-year-old who completes the ordinary goods-CQC course, passes its exam and obtains CQC before the practical C test may qualify for MIT’s age-18 route. A person who is only enrolled or does not yet hold the CQC cannot rely on the reduced age. Without this route, the ordinary minimum age for C remains applicable.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road rules with category B quizzes and mistake review.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and mistake review; category C and goods CQC require their separate courses, exams and official entitlements.
Frequently asked questions
Is enrolment in a CQC course enough to get category C at 18?
No. The ordinary course must be completed and the CQC obtained before the practical C test, under the MIT procedure.
Are category C and goods CQC the same qualification?
No. The licence authorises a vehicle category; CQC is a separate professional qualification required for certain activities.
