Vehicle documents
Does a category C licence let me exceed a truck’s mass limits?
No: category C authorises a vehicle class but does not raise its authorised mass or axle-load limits.
No. Category C lets you drive certain heavy-vehicle classes; it does not authorise exceeding the mass shown in the vehicle documents or the limits for each axle. Even with the correct licence, the truck and its load must meet authorised mass and load-distribution rules.
The licence and vehicle limits are separate checks
Category C depends on the vehicle’s authorised maximum mass and purpose; it does not set how much you may load onto a specific truck. Check the authorised maximum mass in the registration document and any limits for that version or bodywork. Article 62 of the Highway Code sets maximum total and axle masses; the values in an individual vehicle document may be lower because approval, configuration and technical features also apply.
Load distribution matters as well as total weight. A vehicle can stay below its total authorised mass but exceed an axle limit, or carry an unsecured load that affects stability or safety. Category C changes neither the manufacturer’s rating nor the legal axle limits. Check vehicle mass, cargo, axles and loading before departure; use suitable weighing equipment and the technical data for the vehicle body.
For example, if the registration document authorises a truck to a total mass of 18 tonnes, category C does not allow it to carry 19 tonnes. Even below 18 tonnes, the load may be non-compliant if one axle exceeds its limit. In either case, check the documents and actual weight; the driver’s C licence does not cure an excess.
A check before leaving
Read the vehicle’s authorised maximum mass and relevant axle values, then compare them with the load and its position. Treat trailers separately and apply the combined-mass and towing limits too. If you change a body, crane, tail lift or other fitting, verify that the recorded masses and vehicle data remain accurate. If figures are missing or do not match the configuration, request a technical check before driving.

Frequently asked questions
Can I exceed the authorised mass if the truck feels stable and I have C?
No. The licence does not increase the vehicle’s authorised maximum mass or axle limits.
If the total mass is within the limit, is the load always legal?
No. An axle limit may be exceeded, or the load may be secured incorrectly. Check total mass, distribution and placement.
