Getting a category C licence before age 21: when is it possible?

You can normally obtain category C at 21. A goods-transport CQC route may allow access from age 18.

You can obtain category C from age 21. You may obtain it at 18 by completing the standard initial goods-transport CQC course and holding the CQC before the practical test.

The usual age rule and the route from 18

You can normally obtain category C at 21. The Ministry allows a candidate to obtain it at 18 if they hold a valid goods-transport CQC. The CQC must follow completion of the standard initial training course and passing the relevant examination. Enrolling at a driving school or holding a passenger-transport CQC is not enough.

The early route links two requirements: the licence authorising you to drive the lorry and the professional qualification required for the transport activity. The lower age is not a general exemption for every use of the vehicle. Category C does not replace the CQC for work that requires it; likewise, the CQC does not authorise you to drive without the appropriate licence category.

Before starting, ask the driving school or Motorizzazione which course, exam and application sequence applies to your situation and the current rules. Explain that you want category C before age 21 and specify which CQC you are pursuing. Check fitness requirements, any existing licence requirements and documents. MIT procedures and fees can change, so do not book based on outdated information or a route intended for C1.

The route from age 18 requires the standard initial goods-transport CQC course; enrolment or an accelerated CQC is not enough. Category C1, by contrast, is available from 18 without this exception. Before booking, confirm with the driving school that the course and test are those specified by MIT.

  • Usual minimum age for C: 21.
  • Route from age 18: a valid goods-transport CQC, obtained through the standard initial course and examination.
  • A passenger-transport CQC does not replace the goods-transport CQC for this requirement.
  • The category C licence and CQC are separate qualifications, even when obtained through a coordinated route.

What to ask before enrolling

Ask them to confirm which CQC course is suitable, which provider is authorised, what examination is required and when the qualification becomes valid for your category C application. Check whether your existing licence meets the entry requirements and which documents you need. A driving school can organise the process, but for unusual interpretation questions it is useful to get confirmation from the competent Motorizzazione office.

If your goal is to drive lorries professionally, also plan training in safety, driving-time rules and company procedures: passing the exams does not replace training on the actual vehicle.

For category C theory,Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study, timed quiz exams and error review. For the CQC, follow the authorised training route.
