Category C and dangerous goods: is the CQC enough?

No: certain dangerous-goods transport also requires an ADR certificate, in addition to the right licence and CQC if applicable.

Category C authorises the truck, and the goods CQC is required for many professional activities; transporting certain dangerous goods may also require an ADR professional training certificate. These are separate titles, and ADR depends on the goods and transport, not just the truck’s mass.

CQC and ADR cover different requirements

Category C covers the vehicle: it allows you to drive motor vehicles above 3,500 kg, other than passenger categories. The goods CQC is a professional qualification for transporting goods, when required for the work. ADR is an additional driver certificate for vehicles carrying certain dangerous goods by road. A CQC does not replace ADR where ADR is required; ADR does not replace category C or a required CQC.

ADR requirements are not determined simply by a product being called “chemical” or by a truck carrying packages. Identify the goods under the ADR rules, then check the transport method, quantity, exemptions and any specialisation, such as tanks or explosives. The MIT states that the ADR certificate requires a specific course and examination; there is a basic certificate and separate specialisations. The company must also comply with rules for loading, documents and transport safety.

For example, a driver with C and a goods CQC who carries goods subject to ADR in a way that requires certification must also hold the relevant ADR certificate and any required specialisation. If the goods or transport falls under an ADR exemption, the assessment may differ; use the load classification and documents rather than guessing from the product’s brand name.

Check the load, documents and qualifications

Before departure, ask the transport manager for the ADR classification, transport documents, written instructions and required specialisations. Check your driving category, CQC validity and ADR expiry date. If the job involves tanks or another specialised transport, confirm that your certificate includes the appropriate specialisation. Do not rely on the CQC alone when ADR requires an additional qualification.

Frequently asked questions

Does the goods CQC alone allow me to carry dangerous goods?

No. For transport subject to ADR, you also need the relevant ADR certificate, including any specialisation required for that transport.

Does every shipment of chemicals require ADR?

Do not decide from the product name. Check the ADR classification, quantity, transport method and any exemption in the cargo documents.
