C1E: which lorry and trailer combinations are allowed?
C1E covers specified C1 or B towing combinations, each within its maximum authorised total mass.
Italian C1E authorises two types of combination: a C1 vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer over 750 kg, if the authorised total is no more than 12,000 kg; or a B vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer over 3,500 kg, again within 12,000 kg total. Vehicle technical limits still apply in either case.
The two combinations in Article 116
Article 116 defines C1E through two combinations. First, a C1 towing vehicle may be paired with a trailer or semi-trailer whose maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg, provided the authorised total does not exceed 12 tonnes. Second, a category B vehicle may tow a trailer or semi-trailer rated over 3,500 kg, again with an authorised total no greater than 12 tonnes.
Use the maximum authorised masses in the documents, not what the vehicles happen to weigh on a particular day. Add the towing vehicle and trailer ratings and identify which statutory combination applies. Do not confuse C1E with BE: BE covers a B vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer rated no more than 3,500 kg when the authorised total exceeds 4,250 kg; C1E covers the specific combinations described above.
Example: a C1 lorry is rated at 7,500 kg and tows a trailer rated at 3,000 kg. The total is 10,500 kg, within the C1E 12,000 kg ceiling if all other requirements are met. If the sum were 12,100 kg, C1E would not cover it. In both cases, check that the lorry’s technical towing capacity, hitch and axle limits allow the combination.
Check technical limits and professional use
A licence does not increase the towing mass approved for the vehicle. Check both registrations, coupling, axle loads and semi-trailer compatibility. Professional goods transport may also require a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CQC) depending on the activity and any exemptions; that qualification is separate from C1E.
If the vehicle class is unclear, use its registration papers and ask the manufacturer or motor vehicle authority. A commercial label such as ‘lorry’ does not determine the legal class. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review categories and theory through quizzes and error review; the authorised data for both vehicles determine the real combination.

Frequently asked questions
Does C1E allow a combination over 12,000 kg?
No. Each C1E combination in Article 116 has a maximum authorised total of 12,000 kg.
Does C1E replace the CQC for professional driving?
No. C1E is a driving licence category; professional transport can carry separate CQC requirements, subject to applicable exemptions.
