At what age can you get a category D licence?

You can normally obtain category D at 24. A passenger-transport CQC route may allow access from age 21.

You can obtain category D from age 24. You may obtain it from 21 if you complete the required passenger-transport CQC route and obtain the CQC before the practical test. D1, for buses carrying up to 16 passengers in addition to the driver and no longer than 8 metres, is available from 21.

The usual age and the earlier route

You can normally obtain category D at 24. The Ministry provides a route from age 21 for candidates enrolled in a professional passenger-transport CQC course who complete it and obtain the CQC before the category D practical test. Both conditions must be met: enrolment alone is not enough at the time of the test.

Category D authorises you to drive motor vehicles designed to carry more than eight passengers in addition to the driver, also with a trailer whose maximum authorised mass does not exceed 750 kg. Do not confuse it with D1, which has different passenger and length limits and a usual minimum age of 21. The seat count, vehicle approval category and intended use help determine the required entitlement.

The route from age 21 concerns access to the licence; it does not automatically entitle you to carry out every professional service. Professional passenger transport may require the applicable qualifications, and specific services may have further conditions. Rules for scheduled services, chauffeur-driven hire and school transport may also differ. Ask the training provider which certificate you need before the test and check current MIT guidance.

The lower age does not follow from course enrolment alone: before the practical test, you must complete the specified professional course and obtain the passenger-transport CQC. With D1, by contrast, you can drive vehicles within the limit of 16 passengers and 8 metres from age 21.

  • Usual age for category D: 24.
  • Possible route from age 21: a passenger-transport CQC course, completed with the CQC issued before the practical test.
  • D1 is a separate category with its own vehicle limits.
  • Check the category D licence, CQC and requirements for the professional service separately.

How to plan the process

Before enrolling, identify the vehicle and service you are aiming for, then check whether you need D or D1. Ask an authorised driving school about the syllabus, exam sequence, fitness requirements and documents. If you are 21–23, confirm that your passenger-transport CQC route is valid for this path and that the CQC will be issued in time for the practical test.

Once qualified, familiarise yourself with the vehicle’s dimensions, blind spots, doors and safety systems: theory does not replace practical training. For the professional CQC examination, follow the course and materials required by the authorised provider.

To revise category D theory,Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, timed quizzes and error review; the passenger-transport CQC still requires the prescribed course.
