Category D1 or D: which do you need to drive a bus?

The differences between D1 and D, vehicle capacity and how to check professional transport requirements.

D1 covers buses carrying up to 16 passengers in addition to the driver and no longer than 8 metres. D covers vehicles carrying more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. Minimum age: 21 for D1 and 24 for D.

D1 and D are not interchangeable

Category D1 covers passenger vehicles within the subcategory’s specific limits; D covers buses that do not fall under D1, as defined by law. Read passenger capacity, whether the driver is included as specified by law, length and technical characteristics together. A vehicle advertised as a “minibus” or “bus” is not enough to determine its category.

Check the registration or type-approval document and compare seats and category with MIT D1-D guidance. If the vehicle carries passengers for work, separately consider the passenger-transport CQC and any service conditions. A licence category identifies the vehicle you may drive; it does not by itself authorise you to run a passenger transport service.

A trailer up to 750 kg is permitted with D1 and D. You can obtain D from age 21 if you complete the MIT passenger-transport CQC course and obtain the CQC before the practical test. To work as a driver, separately consider the CQC and any authorisations required for the service.

  • Check the category and approved passenger capacity of the specific vehicle.
  • Distinguish the D1/D licence from the professional qualification.
  • For trailers, check category D1E or DE and the combination details.

Private use and professional activity

The question “which licence do I need?” can have two parts. The first is the technical category based on the vehicle. The second is the activity: professional passenger transport may require a passenger-transport CQC, while specific services may need additional authorisations. Rules and exceptions are not the same for every journey or job; check the transport with MIT, the employer and the competent authority.

Before accepting a job, ask for the vehicle model, seats, route and duties. Check the vehicle documents and ask whether the role requires a CQC. For an association’s minibus or a private vehicle, do not automatically assume the requirements of a commercial service: actual use matters and should be described accurately.

Having D1 or D does not guarantee that a vehicle can be used on every road: height, width, mass and local restrictions may require a different route. Before driving an unfamiliar vehicle, identify blind spots, adjust mirrors and plan turns with the rear overhang in mind. In service, follow company procedures for passenger boarding and alighting and breakdowns. These precautions supplement, but do not replace, the legal requirements.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can I get a category D licence?

Usually at 24. You may obtain it from age 21 if you follow the required passenger-transport CQC route and obtain the CQC before the practical test. D1 is available from 21 and covers buses carrying up to 16 passengers and no longer than 8 metres.

Is a category D licence enough to drive a bus for work?

A passenger-transport CQC may also be required, along with other authorisations for some services. Check the activity and vehicle.
