Licence categories
D1E and DE licences: buses with trailers
When a bus and trailer require D1E or DE, and which details to check before driving.
D1E covers combinations with a D1 bus carrying up to 16 passengers, no longer than 8 metres, and a trailer over 750 kg. DE covers a D bus with a trailer over 750 kg. D1E is available from 21; DE from 24, or 21 with the passenger-transport CQC.
The trailer changes which category to check
To drive a bus with a trailer, first identify the towing vehicle category: D1 or D. D1E and DE apply to combinations based on those categories and have their own statutory limits. It is not enough to know that the vehicle carries passengers: its classification, seats, masses and trailer help determine the required entitlement.
Check the registration documents for both vehicles and the MIT D1E-DE guidance. Verify the combination’s maximum authorised masses under the current rule and the towing vehicle’s technical limits. The licence category must match the configuration; the bus must be approved to tow and the trailer must be compatible. Technical approval or higher capacity does not replace the driver’s required category.
With D1E, the bus remains limited to 16 passengers in addition to the driver and 8 metres in length; the trailer is over 750 kg. With DE, the bus carries more than 16 passengers in addition to the driver and may tow a trailer over 750 kg. The usual age requirement for DE is 24, reduced to 21 for holders of the specified passenger-transport CQC.
- D1E pairs with D1; DE pairs with D.
- Check the masses and characteristics of both vehicles.
- If the transport is professional, also check the passenger-transport CQC and service requirements.
Licence, qualification and authorisation
For professional passenger transport, the licence and professional qualification are separate requirements. A passenger-transport CQC may be required depending on the activity and applicable exceptions. Scheduled services, chauffeur-driven hire and private transport may not follow the same rules. The company or organisation arranging the service must identify the requirements; the driver can check them with MIT and the competent authority.
Before starting work, ask the manager for details of the vehicle, trailer and activity. Compare them with your licence and any codes or qualifications. If the combination differs from the one used during training, a supervised practical session matters: towing affects braking and dimensions.
Prepare methodically
Towing a trailer with a bus is a case where practical preparation matters as much as the category. Overall length changes clearance, while a loaded trailer affects braking and cornering. Check load distribution and axle limits; make sure lights and connections work. If the route passes through narrow roads or urban areas, check restrictions on vehicle combinations and plan a suitable route.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between D1E and DE?
D1E pairs a D1 bus (up to 16 passengers in addition to the driver and 8 metres) with a trailer over 750 kg. DE pairs category D with a trailer over 750 kg. The minimum age is 21 for D1E and 24 for DE, reduced to 21 with the passenger-transport CQC.
Does DE automatically allow me to work as a driver?
No. A passenger-transport CQC may be required depending on the activity, along with further authorisations.
