Boating licence
How does the boating licence test work?
The theory and practical tests for a boating licence, and what to check with the office organising the exam.
The boating test includes assessments determined by the type of authorisation and navigation requested. Check the syllabus and arrangements with the competent authority.
Tests depend on the licence sought
The examination procedure is set by regulation and may include a theory test and a practical test. Content and format vary according to the authorisation sought: motor, sailing or both; navigation up to twelve nautical miles or without limits. Before starting a course, ask the office or sailing school which syllabus applies to the licence you want and whether additional tests, such as chartwork exercises, are required.
Interministerial Decree 146/2008 is the national legal reference, but practical arrangements and forms should be checked with the authority receiving the application. The Port Authority or competent office publishes schedules, document requirements and practical guidance. Do not rely on old videos or diagrams: regulations and procedures may have been updated.
- First decide the type of authorisation and navigation limit you need.
- Check the syllabus and tests with the examination office.
- Check documents, certificates and deadlines before applying.
Theory and practical preparation
For the theory test, organise the syllabus by topic and revisit mistakes: terminology, rules, safety and chartwork all need regular practice. Timed practice helps you manage your time, but it should match the actual test format. For the practical test, practise manoeuvres, mooring, propulsion and safety procedures with an instructor; a quiz cannot teach you to handle a boat.
Before the exam, check the practical details: venue, time, identity document, certificates and any required equipment. If a test is postponed or you do not pass, ask the authority about the next steps, deadlines and whether you can retake it. Do not assume another office follows the same rules.
A study aid
For chartwork, if it is part of your course, practise with the scales, coordinates and tools required by the official syllabus; methods learned for a different test may not apply. During practical training, focus on communication on board and awareness of the space around you, not just the requested manoeuvre. After the exam, ask the office when and how to collect your licence. Do not plan to skipper a trip based only on being told you passed: wait until the licence is actually valid.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers boating topics, timed practice tests and review of mistakes to support your theory preparation.
Frequently asked questions
Is the boating test theory only?
The tests depend on the authorisation and include the assessments set out in the regulations. Check the examination office’s syllabus.
Can an online simulator replace the practical test?
No. Manoeuvring and vessel handling require practical training and assessment under the official procedure.
