Boating licence
How to renew a boating licence
A boating licence is normally valid for ten years, or five years after age 60; categories C and D type D2 may have shorter periods.
To renew a boating licence, have it validated by the competent authority and complete the required fitness assessment. The standard validity is ten years, or five years after age 60; categories C and D type D2 may have shorter periods following medical assessment.
Validity and expiry
Ministerial regulations set the validity of a boating licence at ten years from issue or validation. If the holder has reached 60 at the time of issue or validation, the period is reduced to five years. Category C and category D type D2 licences have a shorter validity period as directed by the local medical commission. Check the date on the document rather than relying on memory.
The regulations allow you to request validation after expiry; in that case, the new period runs from the validation date, not the previous expiry date. This does not mean you can navigate while the document is expired. Before setting out, your licence must be valid and you must be authorised for the route and type of vessel.
Validation includes checking that you meet the required fitness standards under the applicable procedure. Contact the authority that issued the licence or the competent office and ask which medical certificates, forms, photographs and fees are required. Procedures may vary between the Port Authority and Motorizzazione and may change over time, so consult the issuing office’s current forms.
- Standard validity: 10 years.
- Five-year validity if you have reached age 60 at issue or validation.
- Categories C and D type D2: validity as directed by the medical assessment.
- You can request validation after expiry, but you must not navigate with an expired licence.
Preparing your renewal application
Start early enough to attend the medical examination and complete payments. Check which authority issued the licence, because the application office and forms depend on the licence type and procedure. If the document is damaged, illegible or contains restrictions, mention this when applying. For categories with specific health requirements, follow the local medical commission’s instructions.
When your licence is validated, check that the date and any conditions are correct. Keep receipts and certificates until the new document is available. If you are unsure whether you may operate a vessel while waiting, ask the office for an explicit answer rather than treating a medical appointment as an extension.
