Boat safety equipment: what to check before setting off
Equipment depends on the vessel, distance from the coast and activity. Check the applicable list and Harbour Master’s Office orders before departure.
There is no single equipment list for every boat and route: requirements and quantities depend on the vessel, planned sailing and applicable rules. Check the current regulations and local orders before setting off.
Why equipment requirements vary with the voyage
The safety equipment required on board depends on the vessel’s type and characteristics, distance from the coast and the voyage planned. A small craft staying close to shore may not need the same equipment as a boat sailing farther out or at night. An online list, even if correct for another boat, cannot automatically be applied to yours.
Start with the Recreational Boating Code and its implementing regulations, then check the MIT’s current provisions. Harbour Master’s Offices may issue orders governing areas, ports, bathing, events and local activities. Read the equipment section that applies to your vessel and planned voyage; also check requirements recorded in the documents or type-approval certificate.
Before casting off, check that required equipment is present, accessible and in good condition. A lifejacket buried under luggage or a torch with flat batteries is not ready for use. Check device expiry dates and condition, make sure sizes suit everyone on board, and ensure everyone knows where the equipment is. Consider extra equipment suited to the weather, trip length and crew’s capabilities, while keeping it separate from the legal list.
- Identify the vessel, people on board, route and maximum planned distance from the coast.
- Consult current national regulations and local Harbour Master’s Office orders.
- Check the condition, expiry dates and accessibility of required equipment.
- Brief the crew on where the equipment is and how to use it before departure.
A practical pre-departure check
Prepare a checklist for your boat using the official rules and keep a copy on board. For each item, note the required quantity, location, condition and expiry date where applicable. Review it at the start of each season and whenever the route or vessel changes. If unsure which table applies, take your documents to the Harbour Master’s Office or ask a qualified boating professional.
As well as equipment, check fuel, engine, battery, communications and marine forecasts; tell someone ashore your destination and expected return time. Do not go out if essential equipment is missing or a fault compromises safety.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a universal equipment list for all boats?
No. Type and quantity vary by vessel, distance and activity. Check applicable regulations and local orders for your case.
Can mandatory equipment be replaced with a more modern item?
Only if the alternative device is allowed by law and meets technical requirements. Do not replace equipment based on resemblance or a product brochure.
