Suspended or revoked licence: what is the difference?
Suspension and revocation have different effects and procedures. Read the order and follow the authority’s instructions.
A suspension temporarily prevents you from driving for a set period or until a stated condition is met. Revocation removes the licence, and you must follow a procedure to obtain a new one.
Suspension: a temporary ban
A suspension is an order that temporarily removes the holder’s right to drive. It may be imposed for Highway Code offences or other circumstances set out by law; its duration, start date and return procedure depend on the case and order. Do not drive during the suspension, even if you still have the document or your digital licence has not been updated.
The notice explains how to hand in or recover the document and any remaining requirements. Some suspensions may be linked to a review, medical examination or other conditions. If unsure when the ban starts, ask the authority to confirm before driving. Specific deadlines apply if you challenge the measure: read the notice and order.
- Check the start date and duration or end condition.
- Observe the ban even if you still have the card.
- Follow instructions for surrender, return and any checks.
Revocation: the licence is withdrawn
Revocation removes the licence as an authorisation to drive. It is not a long suspension: to drive again, you may need to obtain a new licence after the period and subject to the conditions set by law. Requirements vary by reason and may include waiting periods, medical examinations or tests. You cannot resume driving simply because the order’s stated period has ended.
Read the entire document you receive. If your licence has been taken away or declared revoked, ask the Motor Vehicle Office which route is available in your case. If you appeal, observe deadlines and seek professional advice. General information cannot determine whether an individual order is valid.
Notices and resuming driving
Do not rely on a family member or employer to decide when you can drive again: you remain personally responsible. If the order has not arrived or the document is in transit, contact the issuing authority and ask for formal confirmation of your status. Driving while banned may lead to further consequences. If your job depends on your licence, tell your employer and ask for different duties until your entitlement is clear.

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive as soon as the suspension period ends?
Only if the order and any other requirements allow it and your licence is valid. Check that it has been returned and whether further conditions apply.
Does a revoked licence become valid again when the period ends?
No. Revocation requires the process prescribed for obtaining a new licence, under conditions that depend on the reason.
