Electric AM quadricycle: which power and speed limits should I check?

For an electric AM quadricycle, check L6e approval, speed, power and mass in the individual vehicle documents.

An AM licence covers light quadricycles, but being electric or looking like a microcar is not enough. Check the L6e category and the applicable speed, power and mass limits in the approval documents for that particular vehicle.

Why one kW figure is not enough

For an electric quadricycle, start with the L6e approval category and the registration documents, not a sales specification. European vehicle-approval rules and Italian licensing rules can use different definitions and measures depending on the date and context. Distinguish continuous rated power, maximum net power and vehicle mass; battery weight may be treated differently across fields. Category, seating and maximum design speed help identify the vehicle, but must be read alongside the relevant technical data.

The MIT AM page describes light quadricycles and lists speed, mass and power requirements that can depend on configuration and applicable rules. Do not assume every “electric microcar” qualifies for AM just because it is limited to 45 km/h, and do not apply a kW threshold without knowing which type of power the document shows. For a recent or imported vehicle, or one with an unclear class, compare its single circulation document, certificate of conformity and approval number. Ask the Motorizzazione which criteria apply to that vehicle.

For example, an advert may show peak power above the continuous rated power recorded in the L6e documents. Do not decide from that figure alone whether AM is enough: check every requirement for the category, year and applicable rule. If the registration says L7e, the vehicle is a non-light quadricycle and a different licence must be checked.

Read the documents in the right order

First find the approval category. Then check maximum speed, the power figure using the definition in the document, mass and seating. Compare the data with the vehicle’s CoC and make sure its VIN matches. If you only have a commercial label, invoice or webpage, request the official certificate and registration document. If the figures conflict, wait for the competent office to clarify the classification and required licence before riding.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, exam quizzes and error review to study categories and common road rules. Checking a particular microcar depends on its documents and vehicle approval, not an assessment by the app.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review categories through chapter-based study, exam quizzes and error review.

Frequently asked questions

Does an electric quadricycle that reaches 45 km/h always require only AM?

No. Check that it is approved as L6e and verify power, mass and the requirements for its version. Speed alone is not enough.

Which power figure should I compare with the AM limits?

Use the figure defined in the approval documents, not automatically the advertised peak. If the CoC and registration document are unclear, ask the Motorizzazione.
