Can an L6e microcar use the motorway if it reaches 45 km/h?

No. A 45 km/h top speed does not change its L6e category; Article 175 excludes light quadricycles.

No. A vehicle approved as an L6e light quadricycle remains in that category even if it reaches 45 km/h. Article 175 excludes light quadricycles from motorways and main extra-urban roads.

The registration category is what matters

The 45 km/h figure is a technical characteristic typical of light quadricycles; it does not turn one into a passenger car. To establish where the vehicle may travel, read its category on the registration certificate and apply Article 175 of the Italian Highway Code. That provision excludes light quadricycles, along with mopeds and other listed vehicles, from motorways and main extra-urban roads.

This remains true when the vehicle looks like a small car or has an enclosed body. Appearance, a trade name and the speed it can reach do not replace its legal classification. An unauthorised modification does not automatically change the category and may make the vehicle non-compliant. Compare the actual registration certificate and approval data rather than relying on an advertisement.

Motorways and other roads are different

The exclusion applies to the road types listed in Article 175; it does not automatically ban a microcar from every fast road or ring road. For a particular section, check its classification, signs and any local restriction. “Ring road” is an informal name, not a legal category by itself.

For example, an L6e vehicle may be allowed on an ordinary urban or secondary road but still be barred from a motorway even if traffic moves at only 45 km/h. Having insurance and the correct licence for an L6e vehicle does not remove the access ban. Frequently asked questions

Can an L6e microcar use a ring road?

It depends on the section. If it is classified as a motorway or main extra-urban road, light quadricycles are excluded; also check signs and specific restrictions.

Would a speed above 45 km/h change the answer?

No. Speed alone does not change the vehicle's approved category. Any modification must be authorised and recorded, and does not automatically allow access to roads barred to that category.
