Can a heavy quadricycle use a motorway?

A B1 licence is not enough by itself: Article 175 also bars some vehicle classes from motorways and main extra-urban roads.

Having a B1 licence does not by itself permit motorway access; the vehicle matters too. Article 175 bars motor vehicles other than tricycles if their unladen mass is up to 400 kg or their gross mass is up to 1,300 kg. An L7e quadricycle falling within either limit cannot enter. Check the vehicle records and the road’s classification.

Licence entitlement and road access are separate checks

B1 permits you to drive non-light quadricycles that meet the category and limits in Article 116 of the Italian Highway Code. It is not general permission to use every type of road. Article 175 creates separate restrictions for motorways and main extra-urban roads: the driver’s licence does not cancel a vehicle-based ban.

For motor vehicles, Article 175(2)(b) prohibits travel when unladen mass is up to 400 kg or gross mass is up to 1,300 kg; its exception concerns certain tricycles, not quadricycles. An L7e quadricycle meeting either test is therefore excluded. “Heavy” distinguishes L7e from L6e for type approval, but it does not prove that the vehicle exceeds both Article 175 thresholds. Read both unladen mass and gross mass in the registration document, and check how each is defined. Do not use the vehicle’s measured weight on the day of travel.

Article 175 also applies to other roads formally identified by ministerial decree and marked at their beginning and end. So the informal word “ring road” does not by itself mean that a road is a main extra-urban road. Check the official classification of the specific stretch, its signs and any additional restrictions. A vehicle’s speed limit or theoretical capability does not replace the access rules.

Example and checks before setting off

Consider an L7e quadricycle with an unladen mass of 380 kg and a gross mass of 700 kg. Even if its driver holds B1 and the vehicle can reach a high speed, it falls within the “up to 400 kg” limit in Article 175(b), so it cannot use a motorway or main extra-urban road. Another vehicle with an unladen mass above 400 kg but a gross mass of 1,300 kg or less still falls within the ban. Do not assume that “L7e” means “permitted”. If both recorded masses exceed the thresholds, you still need to confirm the exact vehicle category, current wording of the rule and any local or route-specific restrictions.

Before a trip, check type-approval category, unladen mass, gross mass, the road’s official classification and access signs. If the documents do not clearly show the values or conflict, ask the Motorizzazione or road operator. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you review theory on categories, mass and road rules through chapters, exam quizzes and mistake review. It cannot inspect your vehicle or decide whether a particular stretch is open to it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I automatically use a motorway with B1?

No. B1 concerns the quadricycle you may drive; Article 175 adds restrictions based on the vehicle’s mass and class. Check both before joining the road.

Does the restriction always apply if a road is called a ring road?

The name is not enough. Check whether the stretch is officially a motorway, a main extra-urban road or another formally identified and signed road, as well as its signs and any applicable orders.
