Which licence do I need to tow an agricultural trailer?

The answer depends on the towing tractor or vehicle and the authorised limits of the combination.

There is no single licence determined only by the fact that a trailer is agricultural. Identify the towing vehicle, its class and the authorised masses, then check the licence and approval rules for that combination. Professional work may add requirements separate from the road driving licence.

Identify the towing vehicle first

The licence is not chosen by looking at the trailer alone. An agricultural trailer may be towed by a tractor or another vehicle, and the rules depend on the towing vehicle’s classification, mass, permitted speed and road use. For a vehicle covered by the ordinary road licence categories, Article 116 uses the vehicle class and maximum authorised masses. Do not automatically apply B/B96/BE trailer calculations to a farm tractor without checking the rules for that type of vehicle.

Read the registration documents for both the towing vehicle and the trailer. Check their approval categories, mass limits, permitted speed, coupling and conditions for road circulation. The actual load does not replace the authorised figures when a licence rule uses maximum masses, but it must remain within payload, axle and technical limits.

Example: a farm uses a tractor to move an agricultural trailer between fields along a public road. A short trip or a standard B licence does not answer the question. Verify the title required for that tractor class, the trailer’s registration and the conditions for road use. If the towing vehicle is instead a lorry with a trailer, the relevant motor-vehicle licence categories apply.

Separate driving licence from work qualifications

Professional use can trigger training or qualifications for work activities and equipment, separate from the licence that authorises driving on the road. Do not assume that an agricultural certificate replaces a required road licence, and do not assume that every private use requires a professional qualification.

If the papers do not make the class or towing limit clear, ask the motor vehicle authority and provide the registration, classification and intended route. Check local road restrictions and dimensions too. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise common categories and road rules; the exact requirements for an agricultural machine depend on that vehicle and its use.

Frequently asked questions

Is category B enough for every agricultural trailer?

No. It depends on the towing vehicle’s class, authorised masses and the rules for that specific combination.

Does professional use always require an additional qualification?

Not always. Work qualifications are separate from the driving licence and depend on the activity and equipment.
