Two-axle trailer: do you need a special licence?

Axle count alone does not determine the licence; check authorised masses, the vehicle combination and technical compatibility.

No. A trailer having two axles does not automatically require a special licence. The category depends on the maximum authorised masses of the trailer and towing vehicle; axle count, towing capacity and technical compatibility are separate checks.

The licence depends on authorised masses

Category B covers a car within its own maximum authorised mass and specified trailer combinations. A trailer with a maximum authorised mass up to 750 kg can be towed with B if the car is suitable. If the trailer exceeds 750 kg, the B combination must stay within 3,500 kg; above that and up to 4,250 kg, code 96 is required. For combinations over 4,250 kg, BE may be necessary, depending on the authorised masses and trailer limits.

Two axles do not automatically mean a heavy trailer, and one axle does not prove that a trailer is light. The decisive licence figure is the registered maximum authorised mass, not axle count or the weight measured while empty. For safety, load distribution, axle loads and tyres are important as well.

Check compatibility with the towing car

Read the car’s registration document for maximum trailer mass and allowed vertical coupling load. Check the trailer document for maximum mass, brakes and dimensions. The licence does not permit you to exceed these technical ratings. Confirm that the tow bar is approved, the electrical connection works and the trailer’s insurance and inspection are valid where required.

A two-axle trailer may not need BE if the authorised combination falls within the B or B96 limits. Conversely, a single-axle trailer can push the authorised combination over a threshold and require code 96 or BE. Add the maximum authorised masses shown in the documents instead of using the current empty weight.

A numerical example

A car with a maximum authorised mass of 2,000 kg and a two-axle trailer approved at 1,200 kg form a 3,200 kg combination. B may cover it, subject to the car’s technical towing capacity. If the car is approved at 2,500 kg with the same trailer, the combination reaches 3,700 kg and code 96 is needed, provided it does not exceed 4,250 kg. The number of axles does not change the calculation.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps review licence categories with theory quizzes and mistake review; for a particular trailer, use the authorised masses and towing limits in the documents.

Frequently asked questions

Do two axles always require a BE licence?

No. Axle count does not decide the category; compare the maximum authorised masses of the combination.

If the trailer is empty, can actual weight replace its authorised mass?

No for the licence calculation. Actual weight still matters for loading and technical limits.
