Can a trailer be wider than the car towing it?
Check the legal vehicle-width limits and approval data; the car’s body width alone does not decide it.
Do not decide only by comparing the trailer with the car body. Permitted width depends on the statutory dimensions for each vehicle and the approved configuration, including any projecting cargo. Check Article 61 and the documents: a wider trailer is not automatically prohibited or automatically permitted.
Compare the width with the legal limit
Article 61 of the Italian Highway Code sets general maximum widths and specifies how some projections, such as mirrors, are treated. It is not enough to notice that a trailer extends a few centimetres beyond the car body. Identify the trailer’s approved width, measure the parts counted by the rule and check that the configuration remains within the applicable dimensions. Any exception or special approval must be documented rather than assumed.
Read the trailer registration document and approval plate. Measure at the points required, including accessories or cargo that project beyond its sides. Then check compatibility with the towing vehicle, hitch and intended use. If cargo sticks out beyond the approved outline, the separate rules on projection and marking may also apply; the trailer being narrow enough when empty does not settle the question.
Example: a car is 1.80 m wide and a trailer is 1.95 m. That comparison alone does not answer whether it may be used. Check the trailer’s approved width and the statutory limit. A component or load exceeding the legal maximum is not made lawful because it remains narrower than the car; conversely, being wider than the car body is not by itself the decisive test.
Check cargo and route restrictions
A compliant vehicle width does not remove local restrictions, roadworks, narrow passages or signs that prohibit certain combinations. Consider side visibility, mirror positioning and whether you can manoeuvre safely. Do not modify the trailer or fit parts that change its width without required approval and document updates.
If the approved width is missing or inconsistent, contact the manufacturer or motor vehicle authority before driving. Measure the loaded configuration too, and secure cargo so it cannot compromise safety. Frequently asked questions
Is a trailer automatically illegal if it is wider than the car body?
That comparison alone is not decisive. Check its approved width, the Highway Code limit and any cargo projections.
Do rear-view mirrors count toward maximum width?
Article 61 has specific rules for mirror projections. Consult the current text and measure the vehicle using its legal criteria.
