Trailer: how do I check its inspection and documents before a trip?

Check the trailer class, registration, plate, inspection status and towing compatibility before coupling.

Before travelling, confirm that the trailer is correctly identified, its registration documents match and its inspection is current for its class and due date. Also check authorised mass, licence category, the car’s towing approval, plates and equipment. Do not infer an inspection deadline from a trailer’s small size.

Start with the trailer class and papers

Trailers can have different vehicle classes and administrative inspection schedules. There is no universal deadline based on the trailer being small, used occasionally or designed for a boat. Identify it from its registration document and plate, then confirm the inspection date shown in the records or available through official services. If a document has been replaced, use the current one.

Check that the chassis or vehicle identifier, registration and technical data match. Read the maximum authorised mass and payload, which also help establish the licence category with the car’s figures. The licence calculation is not based on the trailer’s measured weight for one trip. Separately verify the car’s maximum towing mass, hitch and approved combination: a current inspection does not prove that this particular car may tow it.

Example: you buy a used trailer and the seller is unsure when it was last inspected. Do not rely on memory or the sale date. Check the official record for that specific vehicle and do not drive if the inspection has expired or the identifiers do not match.

Finish the pre-trip checks

Before leaving, carry the required papers and inspect tyres, lights, electrical connection, brakes if fitted, coupling, safety cables, registration plate and cargo restraints. Check tyre pressure and wear using the manufacturer’s instructions. These practical checks do not replace the periodic inspection, but they can reveal a problem before travel.

If you cannot confirm the deadline or class, contact the motor vehicle authority or an authorised inspection centre with the plate and vehicle identifier. Do not copy the towing car’s inspection schedule onto the trailer. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review quizzes on licence categories and road rules; the administrative status must be checked for the individual vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Does a light trailer never need an inspection?

Do not infer that from its weight or use. Check its class, documents and current official requirements.

If the trailer inspection is current, can any car tow it?

No. Licence, towing mass, technical compatibility, hitch and load limits are separate checks.
