Boating licence
For water skiing, who must hold the nautical licence?
The person operating the boat for water skiing needs a nautical licence, regardless of engine power.
Water skiing requires a nautical licence for the person operating the craft that tows the skier, regardless of engine power. This is not based on kilowatts, unlike some requirements for ordinary craft navigating within six miles.
The licence requirement applies to the boat operator
MIT states that a nautical licence is required to conduct water skiing, regardless of the engine’s power. The requirement concerns the person in command of the boat or craft towing the skier. The skier is not the craft’s operator merely because they are being towed. You cannot avoid the licence by using an engine below 30 kW or with small displacement: power thresholds do not determine this activity’s rule.
Water skiing uses a craft towing a person on skis and requires attention to the crew, observation of the skier and signals. The licence authorises command within the category and navigation limits shown on the document, but it does not replace other safety conditions for the activity. Before setting out, check that the craft may be used for towing and that required crew and equipment are aboard; do not treat the licence as complete authorisation for every commercial service.
For example, if a boat tows a skier, its operator needs a nautical licence even when the engine is 20 kW and the activity is close to shore. If that boat is used only for a trip without towing, ordinary power and displacement thresholds within six miles may apply instead. The actual activity, together with the craft type, determines which check matters.
Confirm the licence covers the craft and outing
Read the licence category and restrictions, then check the vessel type and length, navigation area and installed power. If the craft or route exceeds the licence limits, a suitable category is required. For an organised outing, also ask the operator which equipment and safety procedures apply to the tow.

Frequently asked questions
Is a licence required if the engine is below 30 kW?
Yes, when operating a craft for water skiing. The requirement does not depend on the engine’s power.
Does the person being towed also need a nautical licence?
The MIT rule concerns the person operating the craft. The skier is not its operator merely by being towed.
