School bus: which driving licence and CQC are required?
D1 or D depends on seats and length; CQC passenger qualification is required for school-bus drivers in the cases identified by MIT.
D1 applies if the school bus is designed for no more than 16 passengers besides the driver and is no longer than 8 metres; otherwise assess D. MIT says CQC passenger qualification is required for school-bus drivers in the cases where CAP KD was required, even for own-account activity.
Choose D1 or D from the vehicle data
D1 covers vehicles designed for up to 16 passengers besides the driver and a maximum length of 8 metres. If the school bus exceeds either limit or is approved for more passengers, assess category D. Read the approved seating capacity rather than counting how many children are on a particular trip.
Check the registration document for category, seats, length and any conversion. Seat belts, child seats and access arrangements must meet the applicable school-bus requirements; holding a driving licence does not itself certify the vehicle or service.
Check CQC qualification separately
CQC passenger qualification is separate from category D1 or D. MIT states that drivers of school buses for which CAP KD was required are not exempt from CQC, whether the operation is own-account or for a third party. Do not automatically apply the general private-transport or own-account exemption to school transport.
Before assigning the route, check the required licence, valid passenger CQC and service conditions with the employer or authority. The CQC must cover passenger transport and be in date. If the vehicle is close to the D1/D seat or length threshold, use its updated official configuration.
Example
A school bus approved for 15 children besides the driver and 7.6 metres long may fit D1 if the documents and layout confirm it; passenger CQC still needs checking. A bus approved for 20 passengers besides the driver exceeds D1 and requires D, as well as the CQC required for the school-bus service.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes and mistake review to study categories. It does not replace CQC or the specific checks and duties for school-bus service.

Does every small school bus use D1?
No. D1 requires at most 16 passengers besides the driver and a maximum length of 8 metres.
Does own-account use exempt a school-bus driver from CQC?
