Who can authorise a vehicle normally excluded from a motorway?

Article 175 allows narrow exceptions for vehicles of road owners or concessionaires and vehicles they authorise in specified cases.

Article 175 provides limited exceptions for vehicles belonging to road owners or concessionaires and vehicles they authorise in specified cases. It does not create an automatic private permit for a normally excluded vehicle.

An authorisation is not a general exemption

Article 175 lists vehicles that may not access motorways or main extra-urban roads. It also provides specific cases connected with the road owner or concessionaire and vehicles authorised by them. This exception serves the activities and needs covered by the rule; it does not let a private driver choose to use an otherwise prohibited vehicle.

Before moving an excluded vehicle, identify its category and the legal basis for an authorisation. Ask the relevant road owner or concessionaire what document is needed, which section and period it covers, and what technical or safety conditions apply. An informal email or agreement with a contractor that does not manage the road may not be the required authorisation.

Check vehicle safety and the permit's limits

Where an authorisation is available, it does not cancel other duties. The vehicle must be suitable and compliant, and the driver must hold the correct licence. Conditions may cover time, route, escort, dimensions or access method. Exceptional transport has separate procedures; do not confuse a work permit with permission for a particular load.

For example, a service vehicle may be authorised to reach a motorway worksite. That does not allow the same vehicle to use the motorway for a later personal trip. Keep the authorisation and follow its access instructions. Quiz Patente Ufficiale provides exam quizzes and review of common traffic-rule mistakes, but it does not issue permits or assess a particular route.

With Quiz Patente Ufficiale you can review exam quizzes and traffic-rule mistakes; authorisations must come from the competent road authority.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request a permit for any excluded vehicle?

There is no automatic entitlement. Ask the road owner or concessionaire whether Article 175 allows a procedure for your vehicle and stated need.

Does an authorisation cover the whole road network?

Do not assume that. Check the section, duration, purpose and conditions written in the authorisation.
