Boating licence
What is the minimum age for a sailboat with an auxiliary engine?
Without a licence, age depends on whether the craft is a small boat or larger vessel, the engine and distance from shore.
There is no single age. A small sailing boat with an auxiliary engine may be operated without a licence from age 16 within six miles if engine limits are met; a larger sailing vessel with an auxiliary engine has an 18-year minimum.
The craft category changes the minimum age
MIT distinguishes small boats from larger vessels. A small sailing boat with an auxiliary engine or a motor-sailer may be operated without a licence from age 16 within six miles, provided the motor stays within the applicable power and displacement limits. For a sailing vessel with an auxiliary engine, motor-sailer or motor vessel within six miles, the minimum age without a licence is 18, subject to the technical limits.
Sail area alone does not determine the requirements when an auxiliary engine is used: check the registered category, engine and navigation area. For sailing without an engine, the age-14 rule concerns craft with sail area over 4 m²; Article 39(3)(c) refers separately to rowing craft navigating beyond one mile. Engines have their own power and displacement thresholds.
Check length, engine and navigation area
Before setting out, read the craft documents and the engine's official data. Confirm that it falls within the small-boat category, whether an auxiliary engine crosses a power or displacement threshold, and that the route remains within the permitted distance. A licence may be required even when the operator meets the minimum age if the engine or route exceeds the no-licence limits.
For example, a 16-year-old may operate a qualifying small sailboat with an auxiliary engine without a licence only within the craft and engine limits; calling a boat “sailing” is not enough. On a larger vessel the minimum age without a licence is 18. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road theory with category B chapters, exam quizzes and mistake review.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a sailboat with an auxiliary engine at 14?
The age-14 rule concerns a small sailing craft with sail area over 4 m². The beyond-one-mile wording refers to rowing craft; an auxiliary engine is subject to separate rules.
Is an auxiliary-powered sailing vessel different from a small boat?
Yes. MIT lists age 18 for a larger sailing vessel without a licence within six miles, compared with 16 for a qualifying small boat with an auxiliary engine.
