Boating licence
When do I need a nautical licence on inland waters?
On inland waters, a licence may be required for power above 30 kW or displacement above the engine-specific threshold.
On inland waters, as at sea within six miles, a licence is required if power exceeds 30 kW or displacement exceeds the threshold for that engine type. These are independent triggers.
The thresholds also apply away from the sea
The MIT includes inland waters among the cases where a nautical licence may be required. For inland navigation and sea navigation within six miles, Article 39(1)(b) makes either threshold sufficient: power above 30 kW or displacement above the limit for that engine type. Displacement limits vary among two-strokes, four-stroke outboards, four-stroke inboards, and naturally aspirated or turbocharged diesels.
Being on a lake or river does not automatically mean a licence is unnecessary. Check the craft and engine papers, identify the exact engine type, and compare power and displacement with the correct statutory row. A commercial figure or peak power does not replace approved data. Local waterway rules also apply. Beyond six miles from the coast, a licence is required regardless of the engine thresholds.
For example, a 32 kW engine on a lake requires a licence even if its displacement is below the type-specific threshold. A 25 kW engine requires one if its displacement exceeds the applicable limit. If neither threshold is exceeded, this specific licence requirement does not apply; still check the craft category and local rules.
A three-step check
Record the water area, engine power in kW and displacement. Then compare the displacement with the MIT threshold for that engine type. If a figure is close to a limit or the documents do not distinguish carburetion from direct injection, ask the competent nautical office before going out. The licence must also match the vessel and navigation limits.

Frequently asked questions
Does a 32 kW engine on a lake automatically require a licence?
Yes. It exceeds 30 kW, which is enough on inland waters even if displacement is below the engine-specific threshold.
Am I always exempt below 30 kW?
No. Check the engine’s displacement limit and any other rules for the craft and waterway.
