Starting on a hill in the Category B practical test
Keep the car under control, observe traffic and use the method appropriate to the transmission and vehicle.
A hill start tests control, observation and safe coordination of the car's controls. The practical method depends on whether the car is manual or automatic and on equipment such as hill-hold; follow the instructor's method for the vehicle used in the test.
Control the car before releasing the brake
In the practical Category B test, the candidate must move off without rolling into another vehicle or losing control. Before starting uphill, secure the car with the brake, select the appropriate gear or drive setting and check mirrors and blind spots. Use the clutch and parking brake, or the vehicle's assistance system, as taught for that car.
In a manual car, coordinate clutch engagement, accelerator and brake release so that the engine has enough drive before the vehicle is allowed to move. Do not rush or hold the car on the clutch for an extended period. An automatic may behave differently, especially if it has hill-hold, so learn its normal operation and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Observe first and move off smoothly
A hill start is not only a pedal exercise. Check for approaching traffic, pedestrians or cyclists, signal when required and make a final observation before moving. If the car begins to roll back, stop it safely and reset rather than continuing with poor control. The examiner assesses awareness and safe handling, not a single prescribed sequence for every model.
For example, a car with hill-hold may remain stationary briefly after the brake is released, while another requires a coordinated handbrake start. Frequently asked questions
Is a hill start always tested as a separate manoeuvre?
The assessment concerns safe vehicle control; the exact request and route are set by the examiner.
Should I use the same method in every car?
No. Adapt to manual or automatic transmission and to features such as hill-hold.
