Restricted motorcycles for A2: what to check
A restricted motorcycle can be ridden on A2 only if it meets the legal power, power-to-weight and original-model limits.
With A2, you can ride a motorcycle up to 35 kW and 0.2 kW/kg. If it is derived from a more powerful model, the original version must not exceed 70 kW; all figures must match the motorcycle documents.
The three A2 requirements
You can ride a restricted motorcycle on A2 only if, in its approved configuration as recorded in the documents, it meets all the category requirements. Its maximum power must not exceed 35 kW; its power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.2 kW/kg; and the version from which it is derived must not have more than twice the restricted motorcycle’s maximum power.
The last check prevents a simple kit from making a motorcycle that was originally far more powerful eligible for A2. For example, if the restricted configuration is rated at 35 kW, the original version must not exceed 70 kW. The figures must refer to the actual model and approved modification, not a seller’s estimate or an online specification for a different model year.
For the power-to-weight ratio, the rule uses power in kilowatts and mass in running order as defined by the applicable rules. Do not calculate it using a dry weight from an advert. For a preliminary check, note the approved power and mass from the documents and compare them with the official technical sheet; type approval and administrative records govern whether the motorcycle may be used on the road.
For example, a motorcycle approved at 35 kW with a ratio of 0.20 kW/kg may qualify for A2 if the original version does not exceed 70 kW. A 30 kW motorcycle with a ratio of 0.21 kW/kg does not qualify, nor does a 35 kW restricted motorcycle derived from an 80 kW version. A commercial “A2” label does not replace type approval.
- Maximum power for an A2 motorcycle: 35 kW.
- Power-to-weight ratio: no more than 0.2 kW/kg.
- Base version: no more than twice the restricted vehicle’s power.
- The modification must be properly recorded in the vehicle documents.
How to check a motorcycle before buying
Ask the seller for the current vehicle document and the type-approval details for that specific motorcycle, including any certificate or record of modification. Check that the stated power is the post-modification figure and that the original model meets the derivation limit. A fitted kit that has not been formally approved does not automatically make the vehicle compliant for A2.
If the motorcycle is imported or modified, or its documents contain conflicting figures, do not rely on a verbal promise: ask the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office or a qualified professional what documents are needed to confirm compliance. Consider the licence, technical roadworthiness and insurance cover separately: meeting one condition does not settle the others.

Frequently asked questions
Can I ride an 80 kW motorcycle restricted to 35 kW on A2?
No. The original version must not exceed 70 kW. The restricted version must also meet the maximum ratio of 0.2 kW/kg and be properly type-approved.
Can I ride a restricted motorcycle if the kit is fitted but not recorded?
Do not rely on the physical installation alone. The configuration must be approved and documented under the applicable procedure. Ask the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office to check before riding it on the road.
